As a young husband and father in his mid 20's, Taylor was reluctant to come into ATLAS and share unabashedly with the male advocate. His wife had been a client for a while and spent many months praying and urging Taylor to come in for a meeting. Eventually however, the two men formed a bond that allowed Taylor to open up and share about life, his relationship with God, and how it determines his effectiveness in his role as a husband and father.
On November 18th, 2010 Taylor became an official ATLAS client after proving his determination to better his and his family's circumstances. Through outlets like Men's Bible Study, "The Man I Want to Be" Men's Group, Financial and Marriage Counseling, Taylor has begun to truly understand the necessary actions needed to be a more attentive husband and loving father. He has surpassed expectations of commitment by meeting with his advocate faithfully every two weeks and regularly attending church services.
Taylor has also formed a bond with his mentor, a christian man who is walking alongside Taylor, guiding and teaching Taylor by using christian principles how to be the father, husband and man he should and wants to be.
We are extremely proud of the advances and gains in Taylor's life and anxiously await he and his family's blossoming future.
Marcus officially began his journey with ATLAS on February 15, 2011. It was very clear from day one that Marcus was a good man seeking assistance on being the best father and husband possible. The married father admitted that he was not the spiritual leader of his home. He also noted that he did not completely understand all the teachings of the Bible, but was willing to humble himself and seek guidance. He knew that he needed Godly male influences in his life to help hold him accountable. Some of Marcus' other goals were to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a Godly man and to have a more positive outlook on life. He is well on his way to reaching all of his goals. Since becoming a client, he has maintained 2 jobs, while managing to stay committed and involved in the classes and functions hosted by ATLAS. He has also been very consistent in making his appointments.
Marcus' mentor has proved to be a successful match as well, and their relationship has grown into one of trust and respect. This, along with his participation in ATLAS activities, has proven that with time, he will reach and exceed all of his life goals.
We are so proud of the strides that Marcus is making and consider it pure joy to watch all that God is doing and will continue to do in his life.
When I became an ATLAS client almost two years ago, there were several goals that I was trying to reach and many obstacles that I was trying to overcome. A lot of my recent accomplishments would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the love and support of the people of ATLAS.
ATLAS means Christian friends, support, love, guidance, security, and family. When I walk through the door of ATLAS, I am greeted with warm welcomes from everyone there. I have met many friends through the program and have located many resources that will be valuable to my future. I have learned a lot about managing my finances and living the life of a Christian woman (ATLAS’s most significant contribution to me.)
An important part of the ATLAS program is the Christian friend/mentor. My Christian friend and I get together once a week and we talk frequently. She is always there to encourage, listen, advise and help me. It is a good feeling to know that she loves me and prays for me. We do Bible study, lunches, and family outings together. My Christian friend and I have become very close, and I know that we will remain friends long after I leave the ATLAS program.
Just recently, I successfully completed my Associate of Science Degree in Nursing. This accomplishment not only will help me to make a better life for my two girls and me, but it will serve as an example to them that if you work hard and place your trust in God, all things are possible. I could not have achieved this dream without ATLAS.
ATLAS has had a great impact on my life that will carry beyond my completion of the program. I am happy that I made the decision to see what ATLAS is all about.
Thank you for everything!
My HOPE experience at GCHS was truly empowering. Before I was given the opportunity to take the HOPE class, I felt very different from the kids around me. It seemed like I was the only teenager that was still actually a virgin. I felt like I was the only teenager who didn't do drugs or drink alcohol. The HOPE class helped me to understand that I was the one who was making the right choices. This class helped me to feel proud of myself and my accomplishments. The HOPE class helped me to feel accepted, and this class also taught me a very inspirational quote. The quote is "Choices have consequences." This quote is a statement that I live by. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to take the HOPE class. Thanks to this class I now know that I'm not the weird kid, I'm the smart kid. - Senior & HOPE Student at GCHS.
I am a freshman at The University of Georgia and am currently studying biochemistry as I intend to pursue a career in pathology. It took a lot of hard work, determination and perseverance to get where I am today. But I can say without a doubt that I would not be here without the help of ATLAS.
Everyone at ATLAS has played a part in ensuring I stay on the path to success and I am very thankful for everything they do. I have experienced the many positive features the program has to offer and I can already notice a difference in my life.
One of the main things I appreciate about the ATLAS program is the mentorship. When someone from the ministry calls to check on me, it makes me feel loved and encouraged. It is great that I have people in my life that will support me and my aspirations. Also, the values that ATLAS has instilled in me: strong faith, determination, leading by example, and hope are ones that I will take with me for the rest of my life.
I look forward to the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful ministry for many years to come and teaching the same values to future recipients of this program.
Natasha Woods joined our ATLAS family in February of 2013. Meeting with Natasha is always a joy. In spite of life’s challenges, she demonstrates such great determination for the things she desires. She continues to pray and press through life’s challenges.
She desires to grow spiritually and to be the best mom that she can be to her children. The ATLAS staff has seen growth in her commitment to Lord as well as to her family, job and ATLAS. She is learning to appreciate opportunities that God places in her life to help her reach her goals and grow spiritually.
When asked if she would do a spiritual dance at the Christmas Dinner, she felt honored and was very excited. She danced beautifully! This definitely shows her commitment and growth.
Hello! My name is Dan Crane and I am a grateful believer in Jesus Christ who struggled with alcohol and drug addiction. I don't speak a lot about my past because I don't want the devil to think he is getting any glory for the way I lived. I'll quote John 10:10; "...the thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy" and for 28 years of my life, I allowed the thief to steal, kill and destroy everything in my life.
I had never had a chance to get help for my disease of addiction so February 2011, I was court madnated to treatment at Penfield Christian Homes. After completing the 6 week program I stay another 10 months as a volunteer. During this time I was introduced to ATLAS Ministry and became a client there.
I can't praise God enough for what He has done in my life over these past three years through Penfield and ATLAS. He restored my family, blessed me to be the Godly father and daddy to my daughter that she deserves. Today I work at Penfiled Christian Homes as the maintenance supervisor. November 9, 2013, I completed the 180 hour basic substance abuse councelor certification training course and on January 1, 2014, I started my intern hours to complete my counseling certification and I'm doing my associates degree online in Christian ministries.
I know that God has called me to this ministry to help the ones who are where I once was. So today, I just want to say how thankful I am for the people who make up the ministries of Penfield and ATLAS. Because of your faith and the help you gave me, is why I'm at the place I am today.
I started with the first half of John 10:10 now I want to close with the whole verse. "The thief comes not, but that he may steal, kill, and destroy; Jesus said: I came that they may have life, and may have it more abundantly."
Hello everyone! First giving honor to God who is the head of my life. My name is Diondra Burgess and I'm currently a junior at Greene County High School. My years with HOPE have been amazing.
I've taken HOPE 6th-9th grade. It has taught me so much about my body and how valuable my body is. I'm worth the wait. The class has taught me more than just this but I want to emphasize on this. Starting off in the class, I only knew about an STD, but there is so much out there that you could catch from just a one night stand. Now don't get me wrong about the whole valuable thing. Just because you've messed up sexually doesn't make you damaged goods. So many people put that in teens head, but no baby, if you're reading this right now, God has purpose for you! He still loves you.
I'm currently taking "The 6 Most Important Decisions" where Mr. Josh Ellis is my teacher. The greatest teaching from him to me was something about choosing your friends. There's a saying that says- "show me your friends, I'll show you your future." The saying is very true. Some friends can hurt or help you. I was the type growing up trying to fit in with the crowd. However, that didn't work. I found out that I was born to stand out, to be different. My circle got smaller, but my vision got larger.
I was living in darkness, doing things the worlds way until I found Jesus! He's the best thing that ever happened to me! You should tell someone, "take a look at me, because you're looking at a blessed person." I was always attached to older people. That's where wisdom is. While hanging around them, I overheard someone saying, "never look down on anyone, because you was once messed up too."
HOPE has opened my eyes greatly. I would encourage each parent to tell their kid(s) about this wonderful program. I wanted to emphasize on this particular subject "sex" because girls these days think if I give it up, he'll like me, no boo. He likes you for that period of time and he's gone to the next. I encourage each young person reading this, or would ever read this to wait on the spouse God has created specifically just for you. Even if it takes years for me, I'll wait. Yes, I may date but I'm going to try my best to be safe until marriage. It's nothing wrong with having to say no when a boy asks you to have sex with him. Most guys now get teen girls by saying "if you love me, you'll have sex with me." My advice to you is to tell him "if you can't wait on me, bye-bye." I also understand peer pressure and temptation is all around us, but you have to be strong and pray to God to take your thought captive. Either or, you're still the apple of God's eye.
Relief Valve was birthed so that men could have a place; a safe place for us to take off our masks, deal with the hurts, frustrations and abuse that so many of us face daily. It is a place where we can be open and real about our lives, each other and receive answers from God's Word concerning our situations, without feeling stripped of our "Manhood". At Relief Valve men are encouraged to take their rightful place in God's plan, in turn altering the course of their lives forever. No matter your status in life, No matter where you were born, No matter how low you feel, come and allow God's Grace to carry you to your rightful place!
I've been involved with ATLAS since its beginning 8 years ago, including serving on its Board for a period of time. I was attracted to ATLAS because of its Christian foundation and the programs that it provides, but it wasn't until I joined the team six months ago as Executive Director that I really understood the impact that ATLAS is having in transforming the lives of children and families right here in our community. There are so many families who are struggling to get by, and who need the love and encouragement of someone who will come alongside them and walk with them on their journey. ATLAS, with the Lord leading the way, is transforming the lives of hundreds of children and families each year, and we need your support in order to continue our ministries. Please consider providing your time, talent and/or financial support as we approach the year-end so we can continue to make progress toward our Vision of “a community of families living as God intended, to their full potential.”
Here are some inspirational stories from our volunteers and the people they serve.
